Sebastien Hue

May 23, 2015 by Benjamin Descovich Leave a Comment

Sebastien is dedicated to the CG art scene. Not only does he produce his own fantastic works and deliver outstanding commissions for his clients, Sebastien gives back to the CG art community via tutorials and workshops in various publications including Advanced Creation Photoshop, 3D Art Direct, Advanced Photoshop, and more.

He has also featured in two fantastic books alongside the best in the business:

Digital Mayhem 3D Landscape Techniques which shows the secrets to creating stunning landscapes and Digital Mayhem 3D Machine Techniques which is a detailed and innovative guide to professional machine images. These books are a must for any aspiring CG artist and are filled with hundreds of masterpieces from the top talent in CG art. Both are Compiled by Duncan Evans, launch Editor of 3D Artist Magazine.

With all the above you’d be quite proud, but Sebastien’s talent has also led him to work with big names in publishing across the globe such as Harper Collins (USA), Imagine Publishing (UK), Oracom (France) and Basteï Lubbe (Germany). The games industry picked up on his skills and he has worked with majors like Iceberg Interactive with a long catalogue of sci-fi strategies and Ukando, indie creators of Alien Tribe 2. Because I’m a big believer in indie art I’m sending a super digital high five to the folks at Ukando, Keep up the great work! Alien Tribe is one of my favourite ipad games. Who knew that I’d be featuring the artist behind Alien Tribe’s awesome artwork. It’s a beautiful world.

I just love the action in this scene. I can imagine it just like a movie with the ships screaming through the tumbling asteroids and the slow dance of the planets in the background.

Here is a piece that game developer L30 commissioned for their game Horizon (get it on Steam to satisfy your appetite for space conquest).

From Another Age - Concept 5 - Extractors by Sebastien Hue From Another Age – Concept 5 – Extractors by Sebastien Hue

I’ve paraphrased Sebastien’s explanation: The Mecha Nation use advanced technologies to pump and extract water. They send huge extractor spaceships to explore and drain the liquid like gigantic squid-shaped parasites. They bring the cargo back to the main station and thus fuel a planet of their own. Basically it’s a planet powered by nuclear reactors and protected by a heavy plasma shield.

Sweet Sci-fi to nourish your soul!

Dragon's Anger by Sebastien Hue Dragon’s Anger by Sebastien Hue

If you think Sci-fi is all Sebastien can do…think again and take in this dragon. Fine work indeed. That bad boy is ready for the hunt.

The Lost Ship by Sebastien Hue The Lost Ship by Sebastien Hue

The Lost Ship is a work that makes me think of the tall ships from my Dragon Choir series. The jagged mountains and the sunset could have been painted straight from the pages. This piece shocked me when I found it because I wrote a scene just like this for a yet to be released novel in my book series. For me, this is the magic of art, where an artist creates perfect resonance with a thought or feeling of another person. I am really touched by this and so grateful to have discovered such a talent. I’m sure you feel the same.

Consuelo Pecchenino

April 29, 2015 by Benjamin Descovich Leave a Comment

Consuelo or Conzi as she is better known studied Fashion Design at the University of Florence, before moving to Berlin to work on set design for the Russian House and the Theatre Lieder un Worte. She has traveled around Germany working as a visual effects artist for commercial, animation, cinema and television. Her impressive client list includes Pixomondo(think CGI for Game of Thrones, Star Trek: Into Darkness and more), Storz&Escherich and Chroma Media. Her main tools are Photoshop, Cinema4d, After Effects and Vue.

My fantasy novel Dragon Choir has a few epic battles aboard spectacular ships like these gorgeous galleons. To make this image Conzi created 160 layers of artwork in photoshop. The finished product is testament to a grand vision. The fury of the tempest splashes through the screen. It might be an unlucky Sunday for these ships with the twister ahead, but for me, laying eyes on this piece of art was a fortunate day indeed. I just love it!

Unlucky Sunday by Consuelo Pecchenino Unlucky Sunday by Consuelo Pecchenino

I’m a big fan of tall ships and the age of sail. For me a fantasy world is incomplete without sailing ships and vast oceans. So I want to honour the sheer depth of work in this piece. Check out the early sketch and the final product side by side.

Conzi has done many fantasty, sci-fi and steam punk pieces. Here are some of my favourites.

Madonna pagana by Consuelo Pecchenino Madonna Pagana by Consuelo Pecchenino

Madonna Paganna was inspired by a Turin exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite works. Conzi explains “In Pre-Raphaelite works the recurring themes are death, beauty and symbolism. The crown of violets that she brings to the head, for example, symbolize death and tragic love.”

Abendfeuer Girl by Consuelo Pecchenino Abendfeuer Girl by Consuelo Pecchenino

Get your Steampunk on with this piece. It is from a personal project of Conzi’s called Estr3lla.  This gal is an architect from the parallel dimension of Estr3lla. Conzi explains that in this dimension the occupation is a touch more hazardous than on in our world.

I’m intrigued! Maybe Conzi will keep us up to date with Estr3lla as it develops.

Invisible backstory adds flavour

June 7, 2014 by Benjamin Descovich Leave a Comment

There are swaths of information a writer of sci-fi and fantasy builds up via world building that is in addition to data a writer of general fiction might accumulate. All fiction writers build up a large bulk of character, setting and prop outlines and many other documents that are interesting in themselves.
A novel provides such a small glimpse of an imaginary world. The characters portrayed in Dragon Choir are only a few of the interesting individuals roaming the world of Oranica. I have enough fodder for a few lifetimes of stories from this diverse magical world.
I have gone far back in the worlds history to explain its creation and how the different humanoid and fantasy species came to exist alongside humans. I found that when you go far enough into a a fantasy world’s past you are writing science fiction. Everything that happens in Dragon Choir has been calculated and accounted for according to the rules of the unique magical system and the context of those who wield it. The fantasy creatures have an evolutionary and biological context for their behaviour. The humanoid species have a bit more depth with the addition of cultural and historical frames of reference. The two great cities of Jando and Calimska were founded by people from very different geographic, cultural and political origins and evolved magical cultures that have opposing taboos. How can opposing magical cultures be reconciled when they clash? Dragon Choir has many layers that are subtly applied and will flavour all of the books in the series.
